Frames of Mind: Alive and Well

Dear Friends of Frames of Mind

When we launched the Frames of Mind Mental Health Film Series in partnership with the Cinematheque back in September 2002, our goal – as a public education program of the UBC Dept of Psychiatry and the Institute of Mental Health – was to promote awareness and education around mental health issues, to address the issue of stigma, to challenge the often erroneous representation of mental illness in media, and to do so using the ubiquitous and highly relatable medium of cinema.

Over 18 years of monthly screenings and five festivals, we’ve presented more than 250 great films to more than 20,000 viewers. A defining characteristic of Frames of Mind has always been the presentation subsequent to each film, followed by a Q&A and further (often spirited!) discussion with the audience. To that end, we have benefited from the expertise of innumerable discussants from mental health fields, family and consumer groups, academia, the film making community and more. Many thanks as well to all our community sponsors — over 100! — who have supported Frames of Mind over the years. And many thanks to the UBC Dept of Psychiatry/Institute of Mental Health

Most of all, a huge thank you to you, our audience, many of whom are loyal supporters of Frames of Mind and come back month after month to share the evening with us. We couldn’t have done it without you, and we appreciate your continued commitment to the series.

Please stay tuned for the exciting details of our first virtual screening which will be followed by a live Q and A with our post screening discussants. In the interim, we’ve recommended a few of our top picks previously shown at Frames of Mind and now available for rent or purchase on the web.

Enjoy and stay safe.
